Battling The Bulge In 2005
by Stefan Baumann
Well
it’s that time of year again when we all make New
Years resolutions. This year make a commitment to lose
some weight in your paint box!
When I demonstrate on location to different art groups,
I’m always intrigued by the amount of supplies that
students bring to an outdoor workshop. To be a successful
outdoor painter you must refine your outdoor painting
arsenal, keeping your gear light, and having supplies
that are organized and easily accessible to fire out a
sketch in a moments notice.
I travel with the absolute minimum that I need, often
carrying only a Pochade box. These efficient little items
are amazingly compact, portable, and they function as
their own easel! You can paint on busy locations, as well
as remote country spots from the comfort of your car.
I have even used it in a church during a mass.
Everything
you need is here: Three colors (alizarine crimson, cadmium
yellow, and cobalt blue), one tube of white, odorless
turpentine, three canvasses and my brushes . That is all
that I need. Think about that the next time you
make three trips to the car, lugging 50 pounds of supplies
to a remote spot.
The results of this practice are not simple sketches,
but dynamic intimate studies that sell more readily, and
that look great in a home or on the wall of a gallery.
So this year lighten up your load and take just what
you need to your next outing.
