James Gurney was born in 1958 in Glendale, California. He studied painting at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Aside from being the author and illustrator of the New York Times bestselling Dinotopia: A Land Apart From Time, and two sequels, James Gurney is a dedicated outdoor painter. The first book he wrote was the Artist's Guide to Sketching in 1982. Gurney has had One Man Exhibitions at the Smithsonian and the Norman Rockwell Museum.
