Charles Muench Oil Painting Demonstration
Winter Holly
Although my model, Holly, is always enthusiastic about
challenging poses and locations, I made extra efforts to
ensure her comfort. My late season hunting boots and a big
propane heater kept her posing throughout the winter morning.
For myself, I made use of heat pads and covered the snow
around my easel with black cloth to prevent eye-fatiguing
glare.
 When
working with models, the painting becomes a collaborative
effort. The emotions of the model will invariably be expressed
in paint. The nuances of movement and grace will be revealed
to the perceptive artist over the course of the painting
sessions. One must be willing to make changes in the painting
to enhance that which truly expresses the qualities of your
subject.

Master
Outdoor Painters
Thomas Moran
By Armand Cabrera
Thomas Moran was born in 1837 in Bolton, England---the
fifth of seven children. His father was a handloom weaver.
The industrial revolution motivated the family to move to
the United States to escape unemployment and poverty. The
Moran family settled in Kensington, near Philadelphia. Thomas
Moran’s older brother, Edward, was the first to pursue
art and become a successful marine painter. Young Thomas
never had any formal training but was influenced by his
older brother and his brother’s studio mate, John
Hamilton. Thomas began frequenting his brother’s studio
by 1855 and accompanied him on sketching trips. In 1862,
the brothers returned to England to study the works of J.W.M.
Turner. Thomas made copies of the paintings he saw at the
National Gallery, trying to replicate the color and luminosity
of Turner.

Quote
of the Month
In working I use my memory. This I have trained from youth,
so that while sketching I impress indelibly upon my memory
the features of the landscape and the combinations of coloring
so that when back in the studio the watercolor will recall
vividly all the striking peculiarities of the scenes visited.

Helpful
Tip
Thanks
to Lucinda Cooper from Houston, Texas for sending us this
helpful tip!
Instead of nailing or stapling your paintings into a frame,
try using offset clips. This allows you to easily remove
the painting without damaging the frame. |
