ARTISTS --- CALL TO ACTION!

For the fifth time, legislation has been introduced in both Houses of Congress to provide artists with a full, fair market value charitable tax deduction for the donation of their own work to museums and other qualifying institutions.  The Artist-Museum Partnership Act (H.R. 1524 & S. 548) will soon come up for a vote.  A similar Bill has passed in the Senate several times, but never in the House of Representatives.

Please contact your Senators and Representatives and urge them to pass this Bill.  Museums, charitable institutions and artist will benefit.

The Creative Process
By Stefan Baumann

Stefan Baumann

Every painting created must share the same requirements- accurate drawing, good color, values, and edges. Many artists labor over a painting for hours, and other painters spend less than one hour on a canvas and call it done. No matter how fast or how slow you paint, every style of painting has its merits. Who you are is how you paint!

As a boy growing up in Lake Tahoe I spent my summers camping at alpine lakes high above the timberline, sleeping under the stars next to an open campfire. There I discovered my passion for nature and the elements that make up my art.

Master Outdoor Painters

Jules Bastien LepageJules Bastien Lepage
By Armand Cabrera

Jules Bastien Lepage was born in the village of Damvillers, Meuse, France, on the 1st of November 1848.   He spent most of his childhood there. Bastien quickly showed a facility for draftsmanship and was encouraged by his family to pursue a career as an artist.

Bastien first studied art at Verdun in 1867 and then in 1869 traveled to Paris. He was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-arts, working under Alexandre Cabanel.  In 1874, Bastien exhibited "Portrait of my Grandfather," and received a Third Class Medal.  The next year, he received a Second Class Medal in the Prix De Rome Competition.  In 1879, he received the Legion of Honor Cross for his painting of Sarah Bernhardt.  He briefly spent time at the Art Colony in the village of Grez-sur-Loing.   By 1883, Bastien led the Naturalist Movement and overwhelmed the art world.  Tragically, Bastien Lepage died a year later at the young age of thirty-six from a virulent form of stomach cancer.  He was at the pinnacle of his career.

Quote of the Month

An Artist who has no roots cannot be a proper artist. It is much better to paint the countryside in which one was brought up than to work in alien surroundings.
