Baumann Lectures in Saratoga

Stefan Baumann is the host of The Grand View, a PBS outdoor painting show that travels through America’s National Parks. He will be giving a demonstration that is open to the public on Thursday February 10, 2005. Baumann will be discussing “The Power to Create”, a conversation that will include some of his views on art, and his experiences behind the scenes of his popular television series. Baumann will also demonstrate some of his oil painting techniques, followed by a question and answer session. Baumann is committed that each person in attendance will leave with something of value to take back to their own studio.

Meeting starts at 7:00 p.m.

Battling The Bulge In 2005 by Stefan Baumann

Battling The BulgeWell it’s that time of year again when we all make New Years resolutions. This year make a commitment to lose some weight in your paint box!

When I demonstrate on location to different art groups, I’m always intrigued by the amount of supplies that students bring to an outdoor workshop. To be a successful outdoor painter you must refine your outdoor painting arsenal, keeping your gear light, and having supplies that are organized and easily accessible to fire out a sketch in a moments notice.

Rolling Up Your Paints by Charles Muench

Whether you need to save piles of color, which will help you continue work on large paintings, or simply want to conserve expensive paint, a little plastic wrap does the trick. I clean my palette between sessions (unless I'm working for several days in the field and do not have the time.) I like thick piles of paint to dip into and hate the "skin" which forms on the paint as it dries. Bits of it always wind up on my canvas in critical areas. Also, saving pre-mixed piles helps me when developing larger studio paintings by saving me the time of trying to match "that blue gray which worked so well in the mountain shadows" and other passages of the painting.

I place my pigment pile in a line on a sheet of plastic wrap.

I then fold the wrap over the paint and into a strip.

Finally, I roll the strip. The pigments are separated
and easy to store. When I need to use them again,
I unroll the plastic wrap and scrape the paint using
my palette knife. Damn easy!

Stanhope ForbesMunningsMaster Outdoor Painters

Stanhope Forbes (1857-1947)
By Armand Cabrera

Stanhope Forbes was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1857. When he was eleven, Forbes began drawing at the encouragement of family friends who took him on sketching trips. In college, Forbes began studying under John Sparkes. Sparkes emphasized drawing from casts and models, as opposed to copying drawings by the masters. Forbes enrolled in the Royal Academy School and briefly studied under Millias, Leghton and Alma Tadema.

Quote of the Month

To plant one’s easel down in the full view of all and work away in the midst of a large congregation needs a good deal of courage: but it takes even more to boldly ask some perfect stranger to pose for one under such trying conditions. But our principles demanded it and convinced of their virtue, I always strove to be consistent to them. ”

Helpful Tip

Two of our readers sent in a helpful tip about freezing your paint---Susan R. Ball from Sebastopol, California and William A. Suys, Jr. from Mequon, Wisconsin. Thanks!

Place your oil paint palette in the freezer (after cleaning the mixing field), along with your brushes. This will save you from having to clean your brushes daily---and retards the drying time of the remaining paint on your palette. The paint stays fresh for weeks!
