TIPS ON A SUCCESSFUL PORTFOLIO REVIEW
FOR ARTISTS CONSIDERING REPRESENTATION
AT A NEW GALLERY
by Kevin J. Casey, Gallery Owner

When thinking about approaching a new gallery or venue for representation, there are some pointers that could be used to insure a successful review of your artwork. The most important thing to be considered initially is if there would be a good match between your painting style and the type of artwork that is now displayed in the prospective gallery. Some familiarity with the gallery or a series of personal visits from you, the artist, seems to be in order to establish that this could be the right place for you. Is this a place where only deceased artists or a very particular style of artwork is displayed? Has this venue only represented nationally known artists or artists that work in a particular media? Does the gallery space include plein air works?

Observation of Nature
Painting Nostalgia

By Stefan Baumann

Icons of past eras such as Jiffy Pop popcorn pans and Drive-In movie lots have disappeared from our collective experience to be replaced with microwave bags and strip malls. Dying images of yesterday’s America fade before we realize that they are gone from our view. We look back in lament of their fading presence in our lives, wishing we would have captured them upon canvas.

As an American artist, I see myself not only a painter of beautiful scenery, but also an observer of our time. I witness the elusive icons of my boyhood, open spaces and architecture, as they secretly disappear from my daily landscape. It is important for artists to capture our human environment before the homogeneous creations of urban sprawl change them forever.

Master Outdoor Painters

Frederick Mulhaupt
By Armand Cabrera

Frederick Mulhaupt was born in Rockport, Missouri on March 28th, 1871. As a boy, he operated a newspaper stand in Dodge City, Kansas. After moving to Kansas City, Missouri, he apprenticed to a sign painter and studied at the Kansas City School of Design. His interest in art brought him to Chicago to study at the Art Institute there. Mulhaupt was one of the founding members of the Palette and Chisel Club in Chicago. The Club was organized so evening students from the Institute who worked during the week could paint the figure during the day on weekends. Mulhaupt became an instructor at the institute in 1902, teaching figure classes.

Quote of the Month

There were many painters in Gloucester in the old days who were more exact than he was…but many of these painters might just as well have been painting in England or Norway. Mulhaupt got the smell of Gloucester on Canvas. He captured the mood of the place.

Flat Bristle BrushesHelpful Tip

Thanks to Pam Addison from Taylors, South Carolina for sending us this Helpful Tip!

When painting outdoors with framed canvas, staple a trash bag to the back of the canvas to prevent sunlight coming through your canvas.
When finished, remove the bag and save for your next painting.
