OutdoorPainting.com
held its first “PAINT WITH THE PROS”
Paint Out at Baker Beach in San Francisco, California
on May 14th. Over 60 painters attended the free event,
which included painting demonstrations by Armand
Cabrera, Stefan
Baumann and Charles
Muench.
The day was gorgeous and the views of
San Francisco, Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate Bridge
were spectacular! The fog didn’t roll in until
the afternoon and certainly didn’t hamper the
painters. In the morning, Armand, Stefan and Charles
demonstrated their painting techniques---Armand painted
a Cityscape, Stefan created a Landscape and Charles,
a Figure Painting from a model. After the demos, the
three artists circulated among the attendees and offered
complimentary painting instruction. At the end of the
day, a raffle was held. Armand Cabrera and Stefan Baumann
generously presented their painting demos to two, lucky
attendees.Read

Geometric Planes by
Armand Cabrera
Have
you ever noticed that even though some artists have
painted areas of light and shadow in their paintings,
their pictures still seem to have no unifying sense
of light? That is because they have incorrectly painted
the planes that make up the objects in the painting.
Planes, as they pertain to painting, are
one of the most essential concepts for creating a sense
of light and space in your work. Planes help create
the illusion of form. It is the ability to correctly
identify where the planes are on a form and their angle
to the light that helps to make a successful painter.
Whenever you see a plane change, you must also change
the hue, temperature or value to record it. Imagine
the facets of a diamond. The flattened areas are planes.
By observing the way light changes on these planes,
you can create a believable form.

Master
Outdoor Painters
John Fabian Carlson
By Armand Cabrera
John Fabian Carlson was born in Sweden---the son
of a tailor. The Carlson family immigrated to New York when
John was nine. At fifteen, Carlson studied in the evenings
with Lucius Hitchcock at the Albright School in Buffalo.
He worked as a lithographer during the day to help support
his family until he was 28. He then moved to New York, having
received a one-year scholarship to attend the Art Students
League. At the League, he studied with Frank DuMond. In
1904 Carlson won a prize to study with Birge Harrison at
Woodstock.

Quote
of the Month
We are all living in a neurotically impatient age, when
everyone strains to attain to virtuosity without having
had to do the accompanying labor. I repeat labor. For all
great men have been prodigious workers: in fact, they appall
us with their energy and enthusiasm. They challenge obstacles
with something akin to fury, where a weak man would shun
an effort.
~ John F. Carlson

Helpful
Tip
Thanks to Angie Young of Morgan Hill, California
for sending us this helpful tip!
Whenever I travel locally or abroad, I add a couple of pizza
boxes to
my plein air painting supplies. The boxes are lightweight
and excellent for
protecting wet paintings. Pizza boxes are easy to transport---even
through airport security. I recommend this helpful tip for
every pizza-eating, outdoor painter everywhere!
