How can I protect my digital art from online "art thieves"? by Gita Hazemi

Unfortunately, it is impossible to prevent illegal copying from the Web.
Posting images on the Web always leaves them open to possible exploitation. However, there are several things you can do to protect your art. Here are two commonly used protection devices:

  • Text or Graphic Watermarks on the digital image
Watermarks are transparent. They allow visitors to view the image through the watermark. Any object printed over a watermark is clearly visible. You may choose to add this mark to your larger images. Perhaps you should avoid adding watermarks to thumbnails as they may obstruct the image. Art thieves will not want to copy and use your images on their own sites with your personal watermark. If someone purchases an image, you can send him or her a clean copy without the watermark. Here’s an example of a watermark:

  • Digital Watermarks embed identifying information in the image file
Digital Watermarks can be an identification number, artist information, or any other data that makes your image unique. Visitors can’t see the information on the Web, but you can identify it using graphic program plug-ins or decoding programs.
The bad news: Digital Watermarks don’t keep thieves from using your images.
The good news: Digital Watermarks make the images identifiable if they are stolen.
Watermarking software is available from many manufacturers. Just type "digital watermarks" into your search bar to learn more about this process.

Sir Alfred James MunningsMaster Outdoor Painters

Sir Alfred James Munnings
By Armand Cabrera

Alfred James Munnings was born in England on October 8, 1878. He was the second son of John Munnings, a miller. Munnings left school at the age of 14 for a six-year apprenticeship with a firm of lithographers in Norwich. By day he excelled as a lithographic draughtsman. He studied painting at night. Although Munnings was offered a job after finishing his lithographers’ apprenticeship, he turned it down. Instead, he bought a carpenters shop and converted it into an artist studio. He supported himself through freelance poster work and the occasional sale of paintings. Within months of this decision, he tragically lost his right eye in an accident. However, the loss did not affect his determination to paint. In his autobiography, Munnings wrote of his difficulties. “I wasn’t allowed to use my right eye for months and when I went to paint my brush either hit the canvas before I knew it was there or was not touching it. Mostly it was the latter and I found myself making strokes in the air nearer and nearer until I touched the painted surface…”

Quote of the Month

“All the mistakes committed by artists are due to their having separated themselves from truth, believing that their imagination is stronger. There is nothing stronger than nature. With nature in front of us we can do everything well.”

-Sir Alfred James Munnings

Helpful Tip

Thanks to Bob from Irvine, California for sending us this helpful tip!
If you have brushes that have hardened paint on them,
soak them in vegetable oil for a few weeks and the paint will dissolve.
