Mount Whitney National Park By Rob Alan Martin
GUIDING THE FATE OF AN AMERICAN LANDSCAPE
In the late 1860's, a unique concept began taking shape in America’s burgeoning West: A network of public lands to be held in trust for all future generations. By 1872, this progressive idea had become the foundation of the National Park System. Collectors that are interested in this period often do not realize the role that artists played in this political landmark. Painters like Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt journeyed deep into the back country of these mythical places with two objectives: to capture these landscapes upon canvas and to inspire a nation. These paintings of a once unknown America shaped the destiny of our country’s appreciation for the environment and have become some of the most collected icons of the Western landscape.

Do Artists Need a Website? by Gita Hazemi

I guess the answer is “Yes” and “No”. It depends upon whether or not your goal is to be a professional artist or not. Some folks just want to be artists. They don’t care to sell their works or be represented by fine art galleries. That’s fine. For those artists, having a website may not be important. For serious artists wanting to promote their art on a national scale, having a website in the 21st century is imperative.

Many artists try to sell their works through local venues close to home. Some promote their work through local art shows in public institutions or commercial establishments. Others artists send out brochures or postcards; this can be costly and time-consuming…and doesn’t always pay off unless you have a good collector mailing list.

If you are an artist or craftsperson, having your own, professional-looking website can lend credibility and mark you as a serious art professional. A website can be your 24/7 Reception Desk. It allows you to be easily contacted and gives the visitor/collector information about you and your artwork. As soon as your website is up on the Internet, you immediately have the possibility to reach a limitless global audience.

Master Outdoor Painters

Joaquin Sorolla y BastidaJoaquin Sorolla y Bastida
By Armand Cabrera

Sorolla was born in 1863 in Valencia, Spain. At two years of age, his parents died in a cholera outbreak that left him orphaned. His aunt and uncle raised him. He initiated his artistic learning in 1877 with the sculptor Cayetano Capuz. Four years later, Sorolla won a grant to study painting in Rome. He completed his education in Rome, studying under Francisco Pradilla. While there, he developed a distinct ability for depicting the effects of light. After returning to Spain in 1890, Sorolla settled down in Madrid. He began his professional career with successes, prizes and important orders. Of note, Sorolla won the National Medal of Beautiful Arts in 1892 and 1895 and the Grand Prix of the Exhibition of Paris of 1900. In these years, he painted works of social criticism, which granted a certain prestige to him in both Madrid and Paris.

Quote of the Month

“All the mistakes committed by artists are due to their having separated themselves from truth, believing that their imagination is stronger. There is nothing stronger than nature. With nature in front of us we can do everything well.”

-Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida
