Traveling Light – Road Trips
by Armand Cabrera

ARMAND CABRERA Depending upon what size canvases I plan to paint, I use different equipment setups for traveling as light as possible. I paint canvas sizes from 4”x 6” to 36”x 48” outdoors. Automobile trips usually allow for more gear and a better variety of panel options than when traveling by air.
I find there is no single system that is perfect for all my painting requirements because of the range of sizes I use. The recent popularity of outdoor painting has made equipment more available and much more affordable than it used to be. Whatever your preferred medium---watercolor, pastels or oils---there are currently great solutions for your outdoor painting needs.

Measure your Pochade Box and purchase a backpack that will accommodate all your painting equipment. I pack the bottom compartment with my brushwasher, garbage bags, paper towels, insect repellant, energy bars, water and sunscreen.

The Pochade box, with all my paints and brushes, go into the top compartment of the backpack.

I strap the tripod and panel carrier, with extra panels, to the outside of the backpack.
That’s all I carry!
This setup allows me to hike for miles with up to ten panels and all of my painting gear.

I have a plastic storage box that stays in the back of my vehicle at all times. In the bottom of the box, I keep extra clothing for extreme weather, paper towels, flashlight, solar radio, water, turpentine and a wet panel box.

On top of these supplies, I place my backpack and ugly painting hat.
Instead of using the lid, I secure my gear with cargo netting.
This enables me to pack the box higher than I could with a lid.

The plastic storage box keeps all my painting gear in one, organized place and prevents getting paint all over the vehicle.
OK…I still get paint on the vehicle.
